Easter Plans

We have a lot going on over these next few weeks, so I thought I would outline the plans! Next Sunday the joint service will start at 11:00 a.m., and we’ll meet for refreshments from 10:30 beforehand. Rev. Julian Hamilton will, along with the mission team, be guiding us through the results of the interviews and online questionnaire. We hope that as many of the congregation as possible will stay for lunch after; for the plan is that after lunch we’ll talk about the next steps in our discerning God’s call on us. Many of us want to respond to God’s call to go deeper in fellowship with each other and him following Lay Witness, and this is a clear way that we can do this.

We’re delighted that this year Rev. Dr. Heather Morris will be leading us over several nights in our Holy Week services- Heather will be in Dundrum Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 4th and Good Friday, with us being encouraged to share in Rathgar’s Maundy Thursday service, which Rev. Des Bain will lead. All the evening services will be at 8p.m. Following that it’s up the mountain for our “Sunrise” service at 7am Easter Sunday on Three Rock Mountain, back for breakfast in the church and meeting again for refreshments from 10:30; with our Easter Sunday service starting at 11:00am. This year will be even more special with some of our young people being received into full membership/ confirmed. Easter was a time when new members would finally enter the church in early Christian times, so as we celebrate the risen Christ it will be wonderful to celebrate their new life in him- please pray for those undergoing teaching.

Please try to stay for lunch next Sunday, and to take time out of busy schedules to make these Holy Week services- they promise to be a powerful time of fellowship and teaching.

God bless,

Jeremy

A week after lay witness- and I want to say thank you to everyone who contributed. Without the huge effort by so many in the church it wouldn’t have been the wonderful weekend it was, and be assured it was hugely appreciated. I hope each of you felt, as many do, that it was a powerful time of deeper fellowship and hearing God. Perhaps the culmination of the weekend was the word the team believed they heard from God, based on Ezekiel 47 vs 3-13, verses they believed were for us as a church and as individuals.

The organising team of the church believe some of what the passage says was as follows- but it’s for each of us to read it and ask God to speak to us.

“The river mentioned in the passage is the flow of God’s spirit. The banks are a picture of the church. There are two banks to the river which represents different groups of people or different styles of worship. Both banks are producing fruit and drawing life from the river. One needs the other to define the flow through which the river will flow. Dundrum has such potential. God doesn’t mind us having different styles, He loves us all. He wants us to pull together. Will we be fed by His Spirit? How deep do we want to go with God, ankle deep, knee deep, up to our waist or more? We were encouraged to pray and think more about this word.

If it is not from God it will come to nothing but if it is from God these are powerful words of encouragement, guidance and challenge.”

The true mark of the success of the weekend will be in how we move on from it! Let’s ask God to help us as we seek to come closer to him and to each other.

God bless,

Jeremy

Today we welcome the lay witness team as they lead our Sunday worship, and we thank them for all they have given to us. As I write this they have yet to arrive, but there has been a real sense of anticipation about their visit and I and many others believe that God will speak powerfully through them this weekend. The challenge for us is to listen, and then to act! I pray that each of us- because each of us can go deeper with God, with each other and with those in our community- will both listen and act on what God says!

God bless,

As we prepare for our lay witness weekend, a reminder of what it is:

The Lay Witness Movement is a network of Lay People, mostly from within the Methodist Church in Ireland, who seek to share their experience of Jesus Christ with others. A team of twelve are coming to the church over the weekend of Friday 9th to Sunday 11th March. They will share their story of what it means to be a believer in Jesus Christ in today’s world and witness to God’s working in their lives in everyday situations. Suitable for everyone - families, friends and visitors welcome. The weekend is based around events. These are connected with meals at the Church so you can cut down on the cooking and enjoy the catering- Friday and Saturday Evening meals, Sunday lunch. There will be crèche and children’s facilities available at the evening events for children up to 6th class age; also on Saturday night there will be events organised for those in 1st – 4th year and a late night extra for those aged between 16 and 25- please come and be involved in as much as you can- we believe it will be a wonderful opportunity to go deeper with God, in community, and in fellowship.

God bless,

A prayer from Sir Francis Drake, as we consider God’s call to mission… Disturb us, Lord, when we are too pleased with ourselves,

when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little, when we arrived safely because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess we have lost our thirst for the waters of life;
having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity and in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wilder seas where storms will show Your mastery;
where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes;
And to push back the future in strength, courage, hope, and love.
This we ask in the name of our Captain, who is Jesus Christ.

God bless,

Today we welcome the President of the Methodist Church, Rev. Ian Henderson. Ian is no stranger to many of us and knows Dublin well, for while he is a native of Carrickfergus, the family moved to Dublin and he was educated in Wesley College and in Trinity College. Indeed his first appointment as a Minister was DCM, and later in his ministry also served in Wicklow, Arklow and Avoca. In addition to a preaching and pastoral ministry, he’s also written books of poetry and hymns. He’s married to Ros who unfortunately can’t be with us this morning and he’s a brother to Keith who worships with us here in Dundrum. We look forward to what God has to say through him today, and pray that he and Ros would know God’s blessing and guidance over the year of his Presidency.

God bless,

So if there is an omission- sorry! I want to say thank you to all those involved in (in alphabetical order): car parking helpers, chair rota, church council, church maintenance, cleaning and tidying, church visitors, coffee rota, Coffee style worship, communion preparation and assistance, door greeters, Encounter, Flower rota, Kid’s faith and discussion groups, local preachers, ministry of music- including every instrument played by young and older people, the ministry of reading in the services (and ringing them), offering and counting and envelopes, overheads preparation and presentation, prayer ministry, the stewards, website maintenance, youth workers, the weekly activities like Christian endeavour, Bible study groups, prayer groups, and all those who give generously to the church, financially and in every other way! And of course the weekly announcement sheet preparation and printing, without which you wouldn’t be reading this! Some of the roles are upfront and obvious, others take place behind the scenes, but all are essential and God and we appreciate all you do!

May 2012 be a year of blessings and a year of intimacy with our God! We have some exciting plans for this year- our mission project continues, with each of us being encouraged to complete a 360 feedback survey which can be either filled in online at: http://msurvey.org/c/2011/11/dm/ or by paper copy (obtained from Helen Little); we have a visit from the President of the Methodist Church, Rev. Ian Henderson on February 5th, and we’ll have our Lay Witness weekend on the 9th- 11th March; and that’s just the first quarter…I truly believe that God wants to do wonderful things in our lives and in this church, and we pray that through these events, through our weekly church life and throughout this year each of may learn more and more of Christ’s love for us and his call to mission!
